Wie erzählen leerstehende Gebäude von urbaner Entwicklung, Stillstand und Zukunft? In diesem Case erkunden wir gemeinsam ein ehemaliges Apothekenhaus in Bochum-Gerthe als Beispiel infrastruktureller „Ruinen“ des Ruhrgebiets. Es erlaubt eine Inversion der Perspektive. Im Austausch mit Teilnehmenden, Anwohner:innen und ggf. Vertreter:innen der Stadt untersuchen wir, welche Bedeutungen, Bewertungen und Zukünfte sich um das Gebäude versammeln. Das leere Apothekenhaus ist bekannt und hat schon lokale Berichterstattung angeregt. Das alte, kalte Gebäude markiert eine "heiße" Kontroverse (Venturini & Munk 2022). Der Immobilienleerstand in Bochum und der gleichzeitige Wohnungsmangel ist dabei kein regionales Problem, sondern übergreifend auf ganz Deutschland anzusiedeln. Leerstand ist ein generalisierbares Problem von urbanen Regionen, die einen sozialen Wandel und strukturelle Transformationen erfahren; es ist ein ungleich erfahrenes Phänomen. Dabei ist das Thema in Bochum nicht nur auf Grund der Transformationsgeschichte relevant, sondern weil mit Vonovia einer der größten börsennotierten Immobilienkonzernen in der Stadt angesiedelt ist.

Durch eine Kombination aus Feldbesuch, Diskussion und kreativem Mapping wollen wir Leerstand als sozialen, politischen und ästhetischen Prozess begreifen und neue Formen des Umgangs ergründen. Der Case ist als one-day exploration konzipiert, mit der Möglichkeit einer weiterführenden (studentischen) Dokumentation. Es handelt sich um ein offenes partizipatives Format, das auf gemeinsame Wissensproduktion und kreative Methoden setzt. Eine kurze Online-Vorbereitungssitzung ist geplant, um die Gruppe kennenzulernen und für einen ersten Austausch. Der Case ist nicht nur akademisch, sondern auch für praktisch und künstlerisch interessierte Teilnehmende geeignet. Wir wünschen uns einen interdisziplinären Austausch.

Am Ende des Tages möchten wir ein gemeinsames visuelles und narratives Mapping der Bedeutungen, Bewertungen und Zukunftsvorstellungen rund um das leerstehende Apothekenhaus in Bochum-Gerthe erarbeitet haben.

Mögliche Kooperationspartner sind die Stadtverwaltung, Bezirksvertreter, Journalisten, Initiativen zum Thema Leerstand usw.

Wir suchen

• Studierende, Forschende oder Menschen mit Interesse an urbaner Transformation, Leerstand, Infrastrukturen und/oder STS.
• Offen für interdisziplinäre Hintergründe (Sozialwissenschaften, Architektur, Geografie, Stadtplanung, Kunst, Journalismus).
• Menschen, die gerne im Austausch arbeiten, beobachten, fragen und kreative Formen des Forschens ausprobieren möchten.
• Vorkenntnisse sind nicht erforderlich, aber Interesse an qualitativen Methoden und urbanen Räumen ist wünschenswert.

Was ist geplant?

• Pre-Phase: gemeinsames Zoom-Meeting mit allen Case-Teilnehmenden. Termin zwischen Ende Januar und Anfang Februar 2026, ca. 90 bis 120min.
• Phase 1: Introduction & Framing (kurz, mit evtl. Redebeiträgen von Expert:innen)
• Phase 2: Field & Reflection. Gemeinsamer Ausflug nach Gerthe-Mitte (U35 zum HBF, dann mit der 308 weiter). Vor Ort-Beobachtungen und Austausch mit Passant:innen.
• Phase 3: Mapping. Rückkehr zum Konferenzraum. Gemeinsames Erstellen eines „Leerstand-Mapping“ oder festhalten des Erfahrenen in anderer Form.

What do vacant buildings tell us about urban development, stagnation, and the future? In this case study, we explore a former pharmacy building in Bochum-Gerthe as an example of infrastructural “ruins” in the Ruhr region. It allows for an inversion of perspective. In dialogue with participants, residents, and, if possible, city representatives, we examine the meanings, evaluations, and futures that surround the building. The vacant pharmacy building is well known and has already attracted local media coverage. The old, cold building marks a “hot” controversy (Venturini & Munk 2022).

The vacancy rate in Bochum and the simultaneous housing shortage, however, is not a regional problem, rather one that can be found throughout the counry and beyond. Vacancy is a generalizable problem of urban regions undergoing social change and structural transformations; it is a phenomenon experienced unequally. The issue is relevant in Bochum not only because of its history of transformation, but also because Vonovia, one of the largest publicly traded real estate companies, is based in the city.

Through a combination of field visits, discussion, and creative mapping, we want to understand vacancy as a social, political, and aesthetic process and explore new ways of dealing with it. The case is designed as a one-day exploration, with the possibility of further (student) documentation. It is an open, participatory format that focuses on collaborative knowledge production and creative methods. A short online preparatory session is planned to get to know the group and for an initial exchange. The case is not only academic, but also suitable for participants with practical and artistic interests. We hope to foster an interdisciplinary exchange.

By the end of the day, we hope to have developed a joint visual and narrative mapping of the meanings, assessments, and visions for the future surrounding the vacant pharmacy building in Bochum-Gerthe.

Possible collaborators include the city administration, district representatives, journalists, initiatives on the topic of vacancy, etc.

We are looking for

• Students, researchers, or people interested in urban transformation, vacancy, infrastructure, and/or general STS.
• Open to interdisciplinary backgrounds (social sciences, architecture, geography, urban planning, art, journalism).
• People who enjoy working in exchange, observing, asking questions, and trying out creative forms of research.
• No prior knowledge is required, but an interest in qualitative methods and urban spaces is desirable.

Organizational details: What is planned?

• Pre-phase: joint Zoom meeting with all case participants. Date between the end of January and the beginning of February 2026, approx. 90 to 120 minutes.
• Phase 1: Introduction & Framing (short, with possible contributions from experts)
• Phase 2: Field & Reflection. Joint excursion to Gerthe-Mitte (U35 to HBF, then continue with the 308). On-site observations and exchange with people passing by.
• Phase 3: Mapping. Return to the conference room. Joint creation of a “vacancy map” or recording of the experience in another form.
