Up to date in STS Reading Group: book discussion with Andrew Pickering

ONLINE-EVENT: Tue, 15 July, 1 pm: Andrew Pickering discusses his new book "Acting with the World"

Dear colleagues and students,

We kindly invite you to a 'book club' session: on 15 July 2025 (Tuesday), 1:00-2:30 pm CET, we’ll discuss the book Acting with the World: Agency in the Anthropocene with its author Andrew Pickering in the context of “Up to Date in STS: Early Career Reading Group.” The discussion will take place on Zoom:

https://tum-conf.zoom-x.de/j/64740850511?pwd=LD6vPg7enODVhEebE6Bboao0w05GT9.1

Andrew Pickering is a Professor Em. of Sociology and Philosophy at Exeter University and author of the STS-classic The Mangle of Practice. In his new book Acting with the World, he criticizes the stance of control and mastery of nature and draws on cybernetics to elaborate on experimental, responsive and performative approaches of acting with the world as vital alternatives.

Please note: the discussion is pre-orchestrated – members of the “Up to Date in STS” reading group have prepared questions for discussion, which will kick off the meeting and shape the main part of the conversation. However, interested participants are very welcome to tune in, and further questions/comments can be posed if there is enough time.

All best,

Patrick (Bieler), Yana (Boeva), and Ruzana (Liburkina)
